PASSING THE KNIFE

You will now learn how to pass the knife from one hand to the other. A valid reason to pass the knife is if your opponent has grabbed or trapped your knife arm, and passing the knife to your other hand would allow you to retain control of the weapon. Another reason is if you have sustained an injury to your knife hand, and passing the knife would allow you to protect your injured hand and still use the weapon. One way to pass the knife is by bringing your right hand (knife hand) toward your left hand, and pass the knife to your left hand. If you are left-handed, reverse the exercise.

Observe safe practices when switching grips or passing the knife. Transfer the knife while maintaining constant physical control of the weapon. There should never be a time when no hand controls the knife. I have seen martial arts practitioners passing the knife by tossing it in the air from one hand to the other. Although these practitioners may have practiced their craft hundreds of times, it is unwise to place yourself in a situation where you might lose the weapon. In a real scenario, losing the weapon may mean death; while in a martial arts demonstration or tournament, it may mean only the loss of a point.
